I used to be one of those people.

On Monday mornings my reply to “How are you doing?” (the question to which people don’t actually expect an honest answer) would be “Not bad for a Monday.” On Wednesday it would be “Half-way to the weekend!”. And then of course, “Thank god it’s Friday!”

all-life-for-happiness1Monday to Friday is 71.4% of your life. Do you enjoy that 71.4% or do you wish it away for 2 days of escape?

I eventually got the nerve to quit that advertising career after 5 years (plus 4 years of undergrad). One of the hardest and best decisions I’ve ever made. Every exciting change has a certain amount of fear attached to it.

What do you want more of? What could be going better? Once you’ve answered those questions, here is the follow-up response that none of us like to hear: it’s 100% up to YOU to make it happen.

So do what makes you come alive. It’s what the world needs more of. Do what you want, not what you should. I’m not saying you have to quit your job, maybe you just have to change how you APPROACH your job. Maybe you can stand up for yourself more in meetings, ensure your voice is heard, volunteer for harder projects. What can you change to make that 71.4% of your life more fulfilling?

You could wear crazy socks to work. Yah seriously, spice it up a bit.
