Are you cool?  I sure hope so.  If not, please pretend you don’t know me next time I see you.  Or perhaps you don’t think I’m cool and you’re planning to ignore ME.  Ohmygod the stress is too much for me to bear, I need to go on Facebook and ensure I still have 900 friends (who I don’t really know).

The pressure to be “cool” and fit in starts at a young age.  It all stems from our evolutionary need to be liked and to belong.  But who gets to decide what “cool” is anyway?  I meet people on a regular basis who fit society’s version of cool but, to be honest, I think they’re total douche-bags.

The truth is we all get to invent our own definition of cool, because we get to decide who we are going to be.  Otherwise we end up making decisions based on OTHER people’s opinions, and that disempowers us.  So even though my opinion of cool shouldn’t matter to you, I’m going to share it with you anyway and then YOU get to decide if it makes sense to you or not.  In my not-so-humble opinion, I think YOU are cool if  1/ you have the guts to be 100% yourself and  2/ you treat people well.  That’s it.  You get bonus points if you want to make the world a better place.

If you disagree, that’s ok!  You’re allowed to.  I’m sure there are people out there who think I’m about as cool as a flip phone with an antenna, but that’s alright!  I get to define cool on my terms, just like you do.

In the words of the immortal Dr Seuss: “Today you are You, that is truer than true. There is no one alive who is Youer than You.”  So get out there and be 100% you, treat everyone you meet like they really matter, and drown this world in pure coolness.
