No person is an island. Not the first time you’ve heard that, is it? Well, it’s true. The people you surround yourself with are EXTREMELY important. They either raise you up, or drag you down. Teach you, or take from you. In fact, people often say that you are the average of the five people you spend the most time with – so you better make sure those 5 are people you want to be like!
And to help, we thought we’d share the stories of a few great people and who was in THEIR crew!
Billy’s Top 10 Successful People
With Great People In Their Crew:
Muhammad Ali is known as The Champ, and in a very literal way he shows us what it means to have a great team in our corner. Aside from his outstanding coaches, Ali was often attracted to strong people in his personal life too. And that strength has proven invaluable, particularly as he struggles with the challenges of Parkinson’s Disease today. It may have taken Ali 4 marriages to get it right, but his current wife, Lonnie has always been by his side. Through thick and thin, and there has been a lot of both, Lonnie cares for Ali deeply. In fact, you should read some of the amazing things she has to say about Ali here.
2. Lady Di
Lady Diana was almost constantly surrounded by some VERY well-known people, but that doesn’t always mean they truly have your back or are the right people for you! Luckily for Lady Di, one of her biggest supporters was a GREAT influence – the Queen. While it’s probably never a bad thing to have a Queen in your corner, when she’s also your mother-in-law… well, you never know. But the Queen adored Diana and was a major supporter of her work, work which helped make the world a better place on a daily basis.
3. Mark Wahlberg
I mean, come on. This guy had a whole TV show about his crew. You know, Entourage?? Entourage is based on Wahlberg and his hometown buddies who accompanied him to Hollywood when he left to make it big in the 90’s. Plus, Mark always had his older brother Donnie’s support as well. Donnie used his connections in the music business to help his little brother secure a recording contract that kicked off his career. It seems all that support helped in the end because Wahlberg now boasts a net worth of over $200 million.
4. Ellen Degeneres
Ellen knows that success doesn’t come without help. Our crew helps keep us grounded and helps us see what we can’t see ourselves. Ellen seems to agree, having once said, “sometimes you can’t see yourself clearly until you see yourself through the eyes of others.” So perhaps this why some of Ellen’s closest friends are also super successful in the biz, such as Oprah who has been friends with Ellen for years and it was on her show that Ellen announced that she is gay. Do you have crew members who will be honest with you and push you to be your authentic self?
5. Oprah Winfrey
Oprah is known to have said, “surround yourself with only people who are going to lift you higher.” This is perhaps because Oprah has had both positive and negative influences through her life. As a child, Oprah was abused before she left to live with her extremely strict father. These experiences pushed Oprah who eventually found amazing supports as an adult. For example, President Bill Clinton himself signed the “Oprah Bill” to establish a national database for child abusers. Also, Oprah’s longtime partner Stedman Graham has been a loving support in Oprah’s life and consistently willing to stand back and allow her to have the limelight.
6. Bill… or Hillary Clinton
You don’t get to be President of the United States without some very strong supports and Hilary was undoubtably a strong and unwavering supporter. How do we know? Well, the fact that she stood by his side after learning of his infidelity and through his impeachment is a testament to her strength. And how did he repay her? By supporting HER now that she pursues her own political career. It’s also an important reminder about our Crew – we are THEIR Crew too, and so the support should go both ways.
7. Warren Buffett
Surround yourself with smart people and, yes, that means you might have to feel pretty… humble, sometimes. But the most successful people understand their own weaknesses and surround themselves with people who have those weaknesses as strengths. Warren Buffett is an amazing example of this. As Buffet has said, “It’s better to hang out with people better than you. Pick out associates whose behaviour is better than yours and you’ll drift in that direction.” Makes sense to us!
8. Anne Frank
This is an extreme example, I know, but bare with me here. Anne Frank is famous for her incredibly vivid and heartfelt diary which she wrote while hiding from the Nazis during World War 2. But what is crucial to remember was that Anne and her family survived as long as they did because of the people who risked their lives to hide them in their house for two years in Amsterdam. Those people knew they could face the death penalty for hiding Jews in their home, but they did it anyway. Success can be big, small, or just enough and there is no doubt that Anne and her family were survivors – but they were able to be successful at surviving for so long because of their super-brave Crew.
9. Harry Potter
Yes, I know Harry Potter is not a real person (or so we think) but he is still a great example of the difference that a great Crew can make. Remember, your Crew should lift you up, support you, make up for your weaknesses and, ultimately, just want to see you thrive. Ron and Hermione fulfill all of this! This dynamic trio was able to defeat the most evil entity known to (fictional) human-kind and it is because they fulfill all of these qualities, each bringing something unique and valuable to the table, that they represent the ultimate Crew.
10. Me, Billy!
Okay, so I’m not exactly well-known like the other people on this list, but I know firsthand that I would not be doing as well as I am without the support of my wife, Joelle. She helps me with strategy, social media, and overall support to help me stay focused. She reminds me who I am and doesn’t shy away from giving me “constructive” feedback too. She helps me be a better person, every single day.
Well, those are just a few examples and there are many more. In fact, I am sure you have people you can think of, in your Crew, who you know you are eternally grateful for. So show them some love and gratitude today and, remember, we are a world that is connected and dependent on each and every person around us – so make sure you’re surrounded by people who help you be great and make sure you keep being great for them in return.
Have a courageous day.
